Collagen

Writer: Jahanara MonafJahanara Monaf

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and a word you may have been seeing more frequently in the health and skin care world. Collagen is so very important to our agility and appearance because it is the main component of connective tissue in our bones, skin, muscles, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels and gut. It cements cells together and gives skin its structure and elasticity.

Benefits of collagen:

Improves gut health.

Improves immune system.

Glowing, clear and radiant skin.

Reduces join pain especially for arthritis.

Reduces recovery time for athletic performance and workouts.

Collagen production begins to decline as one ages and can be visibly absent in the face and felt in the joints. Here are some suggestions below on herbs, foods and tinctures on how to boost your collagen intake.

Collagen boosting foods:

Green Tea: promotes elasticity, improves the overall tone on the skin from a cellular level. But if you are prone to Liver related symptoms such as headaches, migraines, cold hands and feet, prone to feeling cold, etc, then I suggest you keep away from green tea as it will exacerbate your symptoms.

Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi): known as the 5 flavour fruit, this herb makes skin supple, soft, moist, glowing and radiant. It has the ability to protect the skin from sun and wind.

Bone broth: high quality bone broth is made from chicken, beef or fish preferably at home. It draws out collagen from the bones and makes it highly digestible and healing for the gut, tendons, bones and skin. Chicken feet broths contain most collagen.

Ginseng (Ren Shen): brightens skin, helps to prevent UV damage, enhances the production of collagen and helps prevent the appearance of aging. Ginseng is a main ingredient in my Vitality tincture which boosts health with soothing the stomach.

He Shou Wu: this herb has long been used to strengthen bones, tendons and hair, balance the kidneys and the liver, increase fertility and cleanse the blood. This herb has been regarded as a youthful tonic, or elixir of life because of its youthful benefits. It is a main ingredient of a follicleformula. Taking this formula can help collagen production greatly through the Kidney and Liver channels.

The formula also helps the early whitening of a beard and hair, alopecia, male infertility, infertility, dullness in the face and skin, nocturnal and spontaneous emissions, low sperm count, frequent urination, osteoporosis, menopause syndrome, knee pain, dental problems, premature aging, lumbago, aplastic anemia, chronic infectious hepatitis, impotence

Foods to eat: almonds, berries, citrus fruits, avocados, green leafy vegetables, garlic, pumpkin seeds

Tip: Facial acupuncture helps with the production of collagen in the face.

Note: I do not promote pharmaceutical goods or off the shelf products. If you want a quick fix full of preservatives, there are plenty of other colleagues who may be able to guide you in that direction but I shall not participate in anything to do with big pharma. If this thing we are going through at the moment has not taught anyone anything, nothing can help you. Goes back to the saying even if the bee could explain to the fly why pollen is better than shit, the fly would never understand.
