Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

"Illnesses do not come upon us out of the blue. They are developed from small daily sins against Nature. When enough sins have accumulated, illnesses will suddenly appear - Hippocrates".

IBS, Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis are all bowel related issues. Generically speaking without an individual consult, I would say that immediately there are issues with a patient's Kidneys, Liver and Spleen. These are things conventional medicine shall never pick up on as original medicine is far superior and not based on scientific research. Islamic Medicine is based upon the Qur'an and Sunnah hence nothing is greater than this.

There are no conventional medical tests and just like anything else conventional medicine is not the ideal way forward for treating bowel conditions. Medical doctors are great at prescribing anti-biotics which are cold and heavy on the digestive system in the process damaging the Stomach further. However, TICM doctors can use a patient's symptoms, pulse, tongue, body, and mood to help bring the body back into harmony. With a full interrogation process, TICM doctors should be able to establish the root cause and from my experience, it is emotions related, which stems back to childhood. Remember, illnesses do not come upon us out of the blue. It takes time and as each day goes by your body will indicate that something is coming up, so I encourage everyone to be in tune with their body.

IBS is persistent Stomach symptoms that last for a prolonged period of time. Those symptoms include a change in normal bowel movements to either diarrhea or constipation or alternating between the two, Stomach bloating, abdominal distention, gas, Stomach pains, acid reflux, nausea, stomach cramping, loss of appetite and feeling uncomfortably full after eating.

IBS is uncomfortable and does interfere with daily life. Conventional methods often don't have people succeeding with long term relief as the root problems aren't being addressed. In TICM, IBS stems from issues with Liver, Spleen and Kidney health, which may have dampness or damp-heat involved. Hijama, acupuncture, herbal medicine, light exercise have been proven to significantly help, if not cure.

Emotions and stress play a huge role in the severeness of the condition affecting the Liver. It's functioning then becomes sluggish, impairing the Stomach function, causing many IBS symptoms.

How to help yourself:

Salaah or Qigong: These movements open up your body's natural energy flow and are very powerful in relieving stress and any mental discomfort that can go along with IBS.

Qigong: You can look online for specific movements that are great for liver strength, healthy digestion, stress, etc. This is a really powerful and healing tool, don't dismiss these gentle movements, as they can give strength to a person as no other motion can.

Salaah: When praying, really focus on the actions of your body ensuring it is done to perfection as per Sunnah. Prayer movements alone are prevention and cure for sickness.

Hijama: detoxification of all the body organs and lymphatic system with a focus on the root cause is the cure.

Nutrition: IBS requires careful consideration of your symptoms and what "triggers" you may experience. It is important to see how food can either heal or hurt this condition. Some key principles would be to eat food that is easily digestible. The Stomach and Spleen need proper fuel to heal. Eat warm foods, cooked vegetables, white rice, sweet potatoes, healthy fats. Consume bone broth. Eat a warm breakfast every morning like a boiled sweet potato along with ginger powder tea between 7-9am. Stay away from raw foods and cold drinks as it is very harsh on the digestive system. The Stomach wants to be cuddled as if it is a baby. It wants warmth and tender loving care. Cut out iced drinks, dairy, sugar, processed foods and focus on eating to heal. Eat breakfast and lunch moderately and a light dinner such as broth or soup but no carbohydrates.

Herbal Medicine: Liver, Spleen and Kidney herbs help support patients suffering from IBS and digestive issues along with anxiety, stress, depression, menstruation imbalance, and Stomach bloating. Herbs will smooth the flow of emotions and support the Liver in its job as the main organ of detoxification. Your TICM doctor will prescribe according to your individual diagnosis.
