Ginger for diabetes



Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) diagnosis includes components of Metabolic Syndrome, namely hyperlipidemia, hypertension and diabetes. According to Western biomedical understanding, these conditions are due to inflammation. This is consistent with vital energy (Qi) and Blood stagnation in TICM. Energy (Qi) is our vital life force that runs through our meridians. When vital energy (Qi) and Blood become stagnant, pain and disharmony results. Dried ginger increases warm energy (Yang) within the meridian system, thus reducing inflammation. Yang is like sky/heaven, male and day (sun), when it is lost, life is broken/shortened and disease/ sickness arrives is an ancient medical saying, showcasing the importance Yang, relating to when it becomes depleted in the body, life ceases to exist.


Though good health is is believed to be a result from a balance of Yin (female/night/cold/earth/moon) and Yang, our modern lives have most people very deficient in Yang, making it essential to nurture.


Compared with taking a placebo, ingesting 3 grams of ginger powder for 8 weeks reduced fasting blood sugar levels by a significant 10% for 40 men and women with type 2 diabetes.


The study, reported in 2014 in Complementary Therapies in Medicine, found that ginger appears to improve the body's sensitivity to the insulin, which, in turn, leads to better blood sugar control. One proposed mechanism, it suppresses inflammatory compounds emitted by fat cells, these can make the body less responsive to insulin.
