Eye health



In this modern age we live in with all the technology that surrounds us, eye health must be given priority. We only have one set of eyes and once it's gone, it's gone.


Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum is one the most commonly used herbs in TICM especially for Liver and eye health and can be purchased from any Chinese grocery shop in the UK or Asian grocery store in Australia.


Chrysanthemum is known to clears wind and brightens eyes and recent studies show chrysanthemum contains luteolin, which has a cell defending action. It protects our eyes from harmful UV rays, helps reduce the formation of cataract and prevents glaucoma.

Chrysanthemum is also rich in quercetin. When our respiratory system is irritated, body release histamines, quercetin anti-histamine. Chrysanthemum also contains caryophyllene, which can eliminate toxic heat (toxic substances ) from our body.


Just boil 10 dried flowers in a cup of water for 5 min. You can add Chinese crystal rock sugar or pure honey (not Manuka) for more flavour.


Apricots

Apricots are a nutrient dense fruit, which is low in calories and full of vitamins A, C, and E. Furthermore, this fruit is an amazing source of beta carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, all of which are potent anti-oxidants that help fight free radicals in your body. It’s best to enjoy apricots whole and unpeeled, as the skin boasts large amounts of fibre and nutrients.


High in antioxidants, they are high in a group of polyphenol anti-oxidants called flavonoids, which have been shown to protect against illnesses, including diabetes and heart disease.


Apricots promote eye health as vitamin A plays a vital role in preventing night blindness, a disorder caused by lack of light pigments in your eyes, while Vitamin E is a fat-soluble anti-oxidant that enters your eyes directly to protect them from free radical damage.


Apricots are good for your skin due to the Vitamins C and E, and will aid your skin. In particular, vitamin C protects against UV damage and environmental pollutants by neutralising free radicals. Furthermore, this vitamin helps build collagen, which gives your skin strength and elasticity. Eating a diet high in vitamin C can help your skin heal from UV damage and prevent wrinkles.

Apricots are good for your gut as they contain both soluble and insoluble fibre. The soluble kind dissolves in water and includes pectin, gums, and long chains of sugar called polysaccharides, while the insoluble kind doesn’t dissolve in water and includes cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.


Apricots are high in potassium, a mineral that also serves as an electrolyte. In your body, it’s responsible for sending nerve signals and regulating muscle contractions and fluid balance.
