Autumn nutrition

TICM nutrition for autumn

22 September officially marked autumn in the northern hempishere according to TICM. Those who do not know, TICM have 5 seasons in the year: spring, summer, late summer, autumn, winter.

As the chill of Autumn air sets in, we are signalled by nature to update our plates and palates. Adding essential TICM foods to your regular meals offers the body increased support to enhance its capabilities to fight off pathogens like wind and cold while strengthening digestion and immunity. When wind and cold enter the body through exposed and or weakened meridians, they can cause chills, headaches, colds, congestion and overall dysfunction.

Nature always provides us with the right foods to help the body stay strong, and all the foods and herbs below highlight Spleen, Lung or Kidney function. The Spleen is invigorated in the late summer, the Lung in the autumn and the Kidney comes into focus in the winter.

Bai He (Lily bulbs): great for clearing heat and stopping coughs. They are often prescribed to deal with bronchitis, restlessness, insomnia, whooping cough, palpitations.

Pears: regenerate bodily fluids, quench thirst, calm the heart, lubricate the lungs, relieve restlessness, promote urination, clear heat, promote detoxification, lubricate the throat, dissolve mucus and relieve cough.

Shan Yao (Wild yams): root vegetables are grounding and essential to eat in the Fall. With the increase of coldness and dryness, wild yams are able to support Lung Qi and Lung Yin, such as in cases of asthma or dry chronic cough. In Chinese, it is called Shan Yao and is found in fertility and Kidney formula's for its ability to tonify Qi (our vital energy).

(Hei Zhi Ma) Black sesame seeds: a staple in TICM, they are associated with strengthening the Kidney and Liver meridians, tonifying Yin, Jing and Blood, moistening the intestines, and helping build the Spirit/Ruh, also known as Shen. Taking black sesame seeds can heal all the chronic illness after 100 days, improve skin tone on body and face after 1 year, reverse grey hair after 2 years, and regrow teeth after 3 years says the Compendium of Materia Medica, the largest and most comprehensive medical writings in the history of TICM.
